Q&A WITH VERNA MAYERS-FAKUNLE

I recently had the opportunity to pick the brain of another phenomenal sister in Christ, Verna Mayers- Fakunle. (The Purpose Alignment Strategist) She made quite the impression on me, and she’s truly an inspiration to the world. It is because of women such as herself that a brand like mine is even possible. Her passion to help bring out the best in others is what prompted me to want to connect with her in the first place. But it would be what she brings to the table as a business woman and woman of God that has kept me engaged. I think that she is not only an inspiration to the world but she’s the epitome of what women’s empowerment is all about. Her life story certainly fits in with the tagline of the brand “break the chain, challenge the status quo” as she has defied many obstacles to get to where she is today. The Q&A session is below, it is my prayer that it touches the heart of everyone reading today and that her message of strength, hope, and courage uplifts and most importantly inspires us all to be the best version of ourselves that we can possibly be. Please enjoy.

QUESTION: (LOLITA)
When you wake up first thing in the morning what excites you, gets you motivated to be the phenomenal woman that you are?

ANSWER: (VERNA)

When I wake up the most important part of my morning routine is spending quality time with God.
Being able to read scripture, pray, and hear from Him is the thing that equips and prepares me for my day. It is in this space of fellowship that I am able to tap into the awesomeness of His power, be reminded of who I am in Him, and find the motivation and assurance I need to face the day.

QUESTION: (LOLITA)
Who/what has inspired your greatness? What impact has this person or thing made on your life as a whole?

ANSWER: (VERNA)

There are so many people who have inspired me in my life, but if I had to choose just one, I would say my mother. She has been an example to me of strength, grace, tenacity, and servanthood. I have watched her as a wife and mother of four children fight her way to living her dreams. From going back to school to get both her undergraduate and master’s degrees after raising us, to showing unconditional love to us as well as to her grandchildren, extended family, and everyone who knows her, she has encouraged me, motivated me, supported me, and held me up in times when I didn’t think I could go on. No matter what the challenge or obstacle, she has weathered every storm with grace and is a virtuous woman in every sense of the word.

QUESTION: (LOLITA)
You may or may not know that the tagline for the brand is “break the chain, challenge the status quo” so I must ask what chains/barriers have you broken in your life to get to where you are today?

ANSWER: (VERNA)

My life has thankfully been a testament to the power of God to overcome chains/barriers to thrive. I grew up as an overweight child and teen who often felt alone and unworthy of love and affection. I internalized hurtful and hateful comments and behaviors from others and made their opinions of me, my own. On the outside, however, I wore a mask of self-confidence and portrayed myself as someone who was too strong to let anything bother her. This behavior continued on into my adult life and in many ways led me to always be willing to fight hard so that my pain would not be seen. In so many ways this behavior was detrimental to my well-being, and I have had to do major work to heal from it and embrace all of whom God designed me to be, the good, the bad, and the ugly. In another way, this behavior was the impetus for my pushing myself to work even harder to reach my goals. It provided me with the inner fortitude I needed to fight for my dreams, never give up, and excel professionally and personally. I refused to be seen as lazy, stupid, weak, unpopular, and miserable, all stereotypical images often assigned to those who are overweight and obese.

QUESTION: (LOLITA)

I’m assuming you’ve had to step outside the box (challenge the status quo) in some regards throughout your life. Please explain what makes you unique and different in how you present your gift to the world?

ANSWER: (VERNA)

My response to this question ties directly to the response above. The “work” that I had to do to heal from the
emotional pain and trauma I endured because of my size meant acknowledging, owning, and embracing every bit of who God has created and gifted me to be. Once I allowed myself to remember whose I was and who I was I was able to fully accept my gifts and begin to walk in my purpose daily. This journey for me has become a significant aspect of how I approach life every day: Bold, Inspired, & Gifted. I make no apologies or excuses about the person I am, instead, I am beyond grateful and empowered by my “differentness” My life journey has been paved with obstacles, roadblocks, incidents, and detours, but all of that was necessary for me to shift forward into the greatness of all God has designed me to be.

QUESTION: (LOLITA)
When you’re not on your grind, that is, working etc. what do you like to do you in your spare time?

ANSWER: (VERNA)

Reading, writing, traveling, attending festivals, watching movies with my husband, board games and puzzles of all kinds, and listening to music.

QUESTION: (LOLITA)
I’d love for you to share any uplifting books, quotes, scriptures, or any advice that you can with my audience. Anything you think might inspire them to greatness?

ANSWER: (VERNA)

I always find myself remembering this quote by Maya Angelou, “Nothing can dim the light that shines from within”. It has served to help me always let my inner soul shine and glow up every room I am blessed to enter because God made me to be a light and not to walk in darkness. No matter what I may hear or think otherwise, I will never allow anyone to dim my light and the message I hope to leave with everyone reading this is that it is imperative you know, understand, confess, and walk in your greatness each and every day! Accept who you are right now, the great and the not so great because every single person on this earth is on a journey. Tap into your God-given inner strength and power to not only begin the journey that is uniquely yours but to walk it with courage, fierceness, boldness, and pride! Every day is a new opportunity!
